Coping with an unplanned pregnancy can be scary. Legacy is here to offer support
Maybe she is a teenager and her parents don’t know. Perhaps she is single and cannot imagine parenting alone. She may be under the weight of an addiction, fighting her way to health. There are dozens of reasons why coping with an unplanned pregnancy can be a terrifying and lonely road for a woman.
The counselors at our Texas adoption agency truly love the women we serve. As social workers with decades of experience in family building, we can offer the following advice to women anxiously staring down the results of a positive pregnancy test.
Coping with an unplanned pregnancy
At Legacy, we see the addition of a human being to our world as a beautiful miracle, especially when it means his or her mother had to make tremendous sacrifices on their behalf. Knowing that their child’s future is bigger than their current circumstances often helps expectant mothers gain a long-term perspective.
If you are coping with an unplanned pregnancy, keep in mind that there is always a positive solution. We often counsel the women we work with to consider these steps.
- Set up an appointment with an OBGYN to begin receiving medical care for both yourself and your child.
- Take time to accept your pregnancy. This may include processing emotions of fear and even grief, but it is an important step. Without it, we find that women often rush to make decisions they aren’t quite ready for yet.
Share your news with at least one person you trust
If you can, put together a support system of people who love and support you. This may look different for every woman. For some, it is their parents and their child’s father. For others, it may be siblings, friends, co-workers, or church community. It may be a small group or a community of people. But you need at least one personal advocate.
At Legacy, we honor every brave woman who shares her story with us. Our counselors are available to talk with you today. If you’re coping with an unplanned pregnancy, call or text us anytime at 214-380-0888.
