Conversation Tips for Teen Sex Talks

Having that uncomfortable sex talk with your teen or pre-teen can be difficult and awkward if you do not feel comfortable.

5939322_sTeens say they are afraid that their parents are going to ‘freak out’ or assume they are doing something they may not be doing.

First tip: do not freak out. Your jaw may want to drop but maintaining your composure and keeping calm is the first tip to having that awkward conversation. Remaining present, giving your teen your full attention and setting aside everything but them. You will be amazed at how much you may learn from your teen being fully present during your conversations.

Often time’s teens feel like they are the only ones going through whatever it is they are going through. Being sympathetic and letting your teen know that you have been there and understand their challenges could help set their mind at ease.

Apart from your own views, safety is the most important message you can send your teens. It may be difficult but stressing the importance of condoms and using birth control can save your teens life. Making sure that your teen understands that condoms are not just for preventing pregnancy but also for reducing the chances of contracting STD’s.

Make sure there is open communication and that your teen feels comfortable talking with you about anything. Talking with them instead of ‘at’ them will make your teen feel more comfortable to open up. Share your past experiences and let them know they are not in this alone.
