National Social Work Month 2014

This month at Legacy Adoptions we are celebrating National Social Work Month and we would like to highlight the important contribution that social workers make to our society.

allThe profession of social work has been in practice for 116-years and is dedicated to improving social conditions and quality of life for everyone. Originally created to assist immigrants in the late 19th century gain the tools and skills needed to avoid poverty; they are now committed to helping meet the basic needs of all people and improve the quality of life for those most in need. They work tirelessly to help people of all ages improve their relationships with others, solve personal and family problems, and help to ensure that all individuals have a safe environment and access to quality education.

The theme for this year is “All People Matter.” Social workers are continually striving to show that all people have dignity, worth, and deserve respect. They believe that everyone has the right to a productive and fulfilling life. They stand up for all people and support diverse families in every community. They seek to give people, regardless of their circumstances, the ability to cope with and overcome obstacles. The social work profession does so much to help those in need and this is a great chance to really celebrate the amazing work they do every day.

So what are some things that you can do to help celebrate and raise awareness of National Social Work month?

You can:
• Post information about Social Work Month to your profile on social media
• Share social work stories with your online network
• Become a mentor for a social work student
• Coordinate a community assistance project
• Inform a local news outlet about a social work event or issue

By helping to spread awareness of social work we can not only celebrate those selfless individuals who choose this profession but also help bring attention to the bigger issues they face; issues like discrimination, poverty, community needs, and both children and the elderly in need. Social workers celebrate the strength of the human spirit through their daily work, so this month we are excited to help celebrate their strength and hard work!
