What to Know If You Are a Birth Mother Considering Adoption

Are you pregnant and considering placing your child up for adoption? There are a few things to think about before you make the decision, and we have outlined them for you below.

Know you are not giving your child away
Many people view adoption as giving a child away to a family, when this couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, adoption is a process where you are placing your child with a family who is able to provide them the care you may not be able to, no matter your situation. This does not mean you love your child any less; rather, you are choosing to work with an adoption program that will bring your child opportunities you are unable to provide.

It is also important to note that not all adoptions are completely closed. As the birth mother, you are able to decide which adoption path you are willing to take. You’ll need to decide whether you would like to visit your child periodically as they grow up through an open adoption or have a completely closed relationship. It is also important to know that adopted children and their families have a thriving relationship because of the mother’s decision. In fact, 81% of parent-child relationships in adopted households are described as very warm and close.

Are you financially stable and emotionally ready to provide for the child’s every need?
A child is undoubtedly very expensive to take care of. Think about whether you are able to quit your job to take care of your baby, and if you cannot, whether you can afford daycare facilities. Are you financially prepared for medical visits, school fees, and providing food and clothing?

Are you ready to be a parent for the rest of your life?
You may have plans to be a parent in the future. But just because you are pregnant does not mean you have to compromise your plans now. If you are facing pregnancy alone, are you ready to handle parenthood by yourself?

When it comes to adoption, every decision is yours to make depending on how comfortable you are. If you have any questions about adoption and all it entails, do not hesitate to contact our adoption counselors today with any questions.
